ICE-BALLS
< prev
CAST: anthony (11) and troy
SETTING:   kitchen
SCENE: anthony learned how to make large balls of ice that have a rope handle coming out of them that allow you to carry or swing them. and when i say large, i mean near cantelope size (he uses party balloons for his mold). this object evolved over a series of freezing experiments he's done in our basement freezer with his mother's help and encouragement. when he showed me his latest invention i was blown away.

TROY
woah. dude. that is cool.

ANTHONY
yeah. pretty neat, huh.

TROY
you should start selling those in your back-alley sales.

ANTHONY
what? who would buy a ball of ice on a rope?

TROY
lots of people, especially the college kids you sell to. i bet you'd get twenty bucks for one.

ANTHONY
why wouldn't they just make their own?

TROY
because they don't know how. and it would take time to figure it out and that is one thing they don't have much of. you would be offering them a pre-made, ready to go ball of ice on a rope. that is called convenience and that is what people pay for.

ANTHONY
but it would melt.

TROY
sure, eventually. to sell them you could put them in a cooler on your table and have the strings hanging out and make a sign that says "huge ball of ice with a rope-handle". then when people ask about it let them look in the cooler. they will buy them. i promise you.

ANTHONY
i don't know.

TROY
what? you're telling me you wouldn't buy a ball of ice on a rope if you saw it?

ANTHONY
nope. i wouldn't.

TROY
really? why not?

ANTHONY
because i never have any money when i'm walking around.

that last line is 90% of the reason why living with kids is awesome. holy dang are they funny. in continuing the conversation about anthony's ice ball, we saw potential problems of unqualified people buying the ice ball and dropping it on their foot or swinging it around and hitting someone, intentionally or accidentally. so anthony did what he does with a lot of his creations--dropped it out of his 2nd story bedroom window onto the front porch which in his later assessment was way better than a plain ole twenty dollar bill.
